Tortilla: A Soft, Versatile Flatbread with Global Appeal
A tortilla is a thin, flexible flatbread traditionally made from corn or wheat flour. Originating from Mexican cuisine, tortillas have become widely used worldwide because of their adaptability, mild taste, and ability to pair with a variety of fillings. They form the base of many popular dishes enjoyed in homes, restaurants, and street food culture.
Corn and Wheat Tortilla Varieties
Two main types of tortillas are commonly used:
Corn tortillas — Made from masa harina (corn dough), naturally gluten-free, slightly chewy, and rich in authentic Mexican flavor.
Wheat tortillas — Made from wheat flour, soft and pliable, ideal for wraps, burritos, and quesadillas.
Both types come in various sizes and thicknesses, depending on the dish they are meant for.
